Black Sheep, Ubud | A Neighbourhood Favourite for Seriously Good Food

Black Sheep is one of those places that doesn’t shout for attention. It doesn’t need to. It’s casual (but quietly chic), unfussy, consistently delicious… and don’t even get us started on the baked goods.

Just outside Monkey Forest in Nyuh Kuning (one of our favourite little pockets of Ubud), it’s the kind of spot that’s great any time of day. Coffee and a pastry. A proper breakfast. Lunch that turns into dessert (as it always should). Dinner when you don’t want anything complicated — just something done well.

The food: straightforward, confident, very well cooked

This is food coming from a well-run kitchen — solid technique, good ingredients, and flavours that make sense.

The menu covers a lot without feeling scattered: pizzas, sandwiches, salads, local dishes, baked goods, desserts. The pizzas are a clear favourite (for good reason), the bread is excellent, and even the “simple” plates feel properly thought through.

It’s the difference between a restaurant built on ideas versus one built on experience.

Coffee & baking (worth mentioning)

Coffee here is reliably strong and smooth — well-made, balanced, and consistently good. There’s also a real baking backbone: pastries, cakes, bread, and those little biscuits that come with your coffee, all clearly made with care.

Nothing flashy. Just done right.

The space: relaxed, local, easy

The vibe is calm and comfortable — not styled to death, not trying to be a scene. It works for solo mornings, families, casual dinners, or meeting friends without feeling rushed or loud.

And yes, monkeys do wander through from time to time. It’s Nyuh Kuning. Keep your food close and take it in good humour.
